The Conservation Center

The Conservation Center is located 4 miles north and 1 mile east of Oskaloosa off Hwy. 63 in the Russell Wildlife Area. It is the the focal point of Mahaska County's conservation activities, housing the Board's administrative office, maintenance shop, and nature center. The nature center contains a variety of hands-on, interactive displays, live exhibits, mineral and fossil specimens, mounted birds, mammals, and fish.

Russell Wildlife Area

This 220 acre tract which surrounds the Conservation Center and extends south to the South Skunk River is an excellent example of disturbed land that has been allowed to revert back to its natural state. Part of the area was once a limestone quarry and crushing operation. The area's five quarry ponds offer anglers the chance to catch bass, catfish, and bluegills. small boats and canoes are permitted on all of the ponds. Wooded areas, and a prairie restoration are accessible by foot for enjoyment of activities such as hiking, hunting, birdwatching or cross country skiing.
